My Content Story: Samna Ghani- Writing My Way Into Another Life

I have been writing since I was 10 years old. It started with a few short poems which I submitted to our local children’s newspaper. When my first poem was published, I was ecstatic, and it was at that moment that I knew writing would always be a critical component of my life. From poems, I moved on to short articles and then short stories for children. Every time I wrote something, and it got published, it would encourage me to continue writing.

Years passed, and every day I would write something new in my journal. When the time came to choose my University major, I wanted to do something in Journalism and Mass Communications. Unfortunately, the city I lived in at the time did not have a good program, and so I opted for my next best choice – a Master’s in Business Administration. But writing remained my first love and becoming a published author continued to be my ultimate dream.

I started working in healthcare marketing once I completed my MBA. During this time, there was a seminar in my city about freelance writing. Obviously, I had to attend, and it was there I discovered an entirely new group of writers. I started to do a bit of writing for the company that had organized the seminar. I did not do it for the money. I already had a full-time job. I only did it because they provided me the opportunity to write. Once I entered the domain of freelance writing, I got project after project. I used to write after I came home from work, but I did it without any complaints because writing is something I have always enjoyed.

In 2004, I moved to Canada. I faced the same challenges that migrants usually face when they move to a new country. But the one thing that I absolutely loved about my new country was the libraries. I would spend hours and hours there. One day, I was walking on the streets of Toronto, and I saw a job posting for a Research Writer. And that was the turning point for me. I walked in, gave an interview and got the job. I’ve never looked back since that day.

Over the years, I have worked as a writer and editor for a multitude of clients. I have written about healthcare, marketing, management, technology, education, human resources and organizational behavior. I have worked for healthcare publishers, content writing companies, doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, marketers, and entrepreneurs. Simultaneously, I have pursued my passion for writing children’s stories and romance novels.

I am now a published author, and though I may not be J.K. Rowling, I am at least on the right path – the path where I get to write. I may have short deadlines; I may have loads and loads of material to read. But I love it all. People don’t realize the life of freelance writers. Just because we don’t have a 9 to 5 job does not mean we don’t put in the hours. I have often stayed up half the night finishing a deadline.

The point is that a writer is never off the job. A writer writes. If they are not writing, they are thinking about writing. That is what I love about being a writer. It’s my own personal world where I can have as many Mr. Darcys’ and Mr. Thorntons’ as I want; where I can be Elizabeth Bennett one day and Margaret Hale the next. There is nobody who can stop me from creating stories, making up characters and writing an entirely new life. That is exactly how I see my writing – a chance to write my way into another life.
